Louis Gabriel

Classically trained pianist, culinarian and landscape/still life artist. Originally chose to take up photography only as a minor hobby after having been persuaded to do so by his sister-in-law, then an amateur photographer herself.

Beginning in 1992, was mentored in the Zone System and other important fundamentals of photography by friend Rolf Mendez, a veteran photographer and former television and motion picture cameraman who began his career working as an assistant to the great Ansel Adams.

Set out on his own in 1994, spending the next few years experimenting with both new and contemporary photographic techniques as well as with classic and traditional ones. Made the permanent switch from film to digital in 2003. Saw his first publication soon after.

Has since distinguished himself for his mastery of studio lighting and elegant "retro chic" style. Credits George Hurrell and André de Dienes as the artists who most influenced his work.

Divides his time now between his hometown, Los Angeles, and Mexico City.
